Reading Out Loud with Your Child/Student(s)
Reading out loud with children is a wonderful way to get them interested in books. Modeling is the best way to teach and reading aloud is a fun way to model! Here are some suggestions for reading out loud from our team of educators at MonkeyReader.com:
1. Choose a book that lends itself to being read out loud. Books that are heavy with dialogue are hard to keep interesting.
2. Love the book you are reading! The more you enjoy reading it, the more passion you will show in your reading. If you are bored with a book, it will show.
3. Share the reading with your child. Take turns. An active reader will have ownership in the book and stay more focused.
4. Make a BIG deal out of "Read Aloud Time!" Choose an area in the home or classroom that is comfortable and create an atmosphere that is special. You can dim the lights or light up the fireplace. The more special it feels, the more special it will be.
5. Ask questions every now and then to make sure the child understands what is being read. You don't want to ask too many questions, but one every few pages can help you assess your child's understanding of the material being read.
6. Read with expression and change your voice up. This is not a time to worry that you might sound childish. The more fun you have, the more interesting your read will be.
7. Leave your child wanting more. It is better to end your reading sessions on a high note. If your assigned reading time is over and your child is asking for more, you should remind them that you will continue during your next reading time. Make sure to follow through!
